My Head Start Story: Deena

Head Start Stories,

Submitted by: Deena, Head Start Grandparent

Before my two-year-old grandson started Head Start, he didn’t have as many opportunities to be around other children his age or experience a structured learning environment. Since starting the program, I have seen such a positive change in him. He is learning how to interact with other children, follow a routine, listen to his teachers, and become more independent. I love seeing him come home with new things he has learned and watching his little personality and confidence grow. One of the biggest achievements for me is simply seeing how comfortable and happy he has become going to school. At two years old, being away from the person who takes care of you can be a big adjustment. Now he knows his teachers, feels safe with them, and is excited to learn and play. That may seem like a small accomplishment to some people, but to me it is huge. Head Start is giving him a strong foundation at such an important age. I can already see him growing socially, emotionally, and academically, and I am so grateful to the staff for being part of that growth. Head Start is helping prepare my grandson for a successful future, one little milestone at a time.

What I appreciate most about Head Start is the wonderful staff and the safe, caring environment they provide for my two-year-old grandson. As his grandmother and caregiver, it means everything to me to be able to leave him knowing that he is with people who genuinely care about him. I love that Head Start is not just childcare. He is learning, socializing with other children, building confidence, and developing new skills every day. The staff makes him feel comfortable and welcomed, which gives me peace of mind while I am at work. Knowing that he is happy, safe, learning, and loved while I am working is something I am extremely grateful for. Head Start has truly been a blessing to both my grandson and me.

I would encourage families to consider Head Start because it offers children so much more than just a safe place to stay while their parents or caregivers work. Children are learning, making friends, building confidence, and developing important social and emotional skills at a young age. For me, having my two-year-old grandson in Head Start has been a blessing. I can go to work knowing he is safe, cared for, and surrounded by staff who genuinely care about him. At the same time, he is learning and growing every day. Head Start supports not only the child but the entire family. Having that extra support and peace of mind can make such a difference, and I would definitely encourage other families to take advantage of the opportunity.
