My Head Start Story: Carla
Submitted by: Carla, Head Start Parent and Staff
As a young mother raising three boys while my husband served in the military, I often felt isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure of my own path beyond caring for my family. When I enrolled my oldest son in Head Start, I thought I was opening a door for him, but I soon discovered it was also a life-changing opportunity for me. Through the support, encouragement, and resources I received, Head Start helped me rediscover my confidence, reconnect with my community, and believe in my potential.
Today, I am proud to share that all three of my sons followed in their father's footsteps and are now serving in the military, continuing a legacy of service and dedication. Equally meaningful, I now serve as an Early Head Start Home Visitor, helping families find hope, strengthen their parenting skills, and realize that one supportive connection can truly change the course of a life, just as Head Start changed mine.
What I appreciated most about Head Start my children were in was that it supported not only my child, but also me as a parent. My Family Service Worker did more than connect me to services. She connected me to possibilities and helped me see potential in myself that I had forgotten was there. She encouraged me to participate in trainings that strengthened my parenting skills, increased my knowledge, and gave me the confidence to grow. When I was hesitant about returning to work, she worked with me to set goals and helped me believe that I could achieve them.
Through Head Start, I began building relationships and reconnecting with my community. For the first time in a long while, I stepped outside of my comfort zone and started engaging with the world around me. I began to see myself as more than just a mother, and little by little, I rediscovered my confidence and sense of purpose. Head Start also empowered me to become a stronger advocate for my children. I learned how to be more involved in their education, better understand their development, and confidently speak up for their needs. The support, encouragement, and opportunities I received through Head Start changed my life and helped shape the parent, professional, and person I am today.
