My Head Start Story: Sheyla

My family and I came to this country when I was only 6 years old. Although I was too old for the Head Start program, my younger sister was able to be a part of it. My mom was very active during the time my sister attended Head Start and was even a Policy Council Parent. She gained so much knowledge and so many skills from being in the program with my sister that allowed her to learn more about the education system here and how to help all three of us navigate all the changes. 

My mom continued to be a huge advocate for our education through elementary, middle school, high school, and college. I believe her time with Head Start gave her the confidence and the skills necessary to be an advocate for her children. I saw how much my mom and our family gained and accomplished thanks to Head Start, and my passion for early childhood education bloomed from there.

That is what led me to pursue a career in early childhood education and to my job today as an EHS Program Services Coordinator for an Early Head Start program. I was able to obtain a Master's degree in early childhood education, and now I take part in the decision-making and the shaping of our program. I lead our Policy Council, and it brings me such joy to know that I am helping parents the way someone once helped my mom become empowered and an advocate for us. 

I am an Early Head Start Program Services Coordinator because I believe every child and family deserves to feel supported, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive. I do what I do because I care about making a meaningful difference in the lives of families and helping create a strong foundation for children's success. I value connection, compassion, teamwork, and advocacy, and I am proud to support staff and families in creating positive experiences and opportunities for young children.
